Gathie Falk: Revelations
Gathie Falk: Revelations, organized and circulated by the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, investigates the career of a legendary Canadian artist. Now in her nineties, Falk was born in 1928 of Russian Mennonite heritage in Brandon, Manitoba. She settled in Vancouver, where she established herself as one of the country’s most visionary and experimental artists. Her work has been widely collected and is featured in the holdings of the Audain Art Museum, Art Gallery of Ontario, National Gallery of Canada, Winnipeg Art Gallery, Dupont Canada Inc., London Life and the Workman’s Compensation Board. Falk has been the recipient of numerous visual arts honours, including the Audain Prize, Order of Canada, Governor General’s Award, and the Gershon Iskowitz Prize.
“There was a time, long ago, when I thought I would like nothing more than to be a street-corner musician. What I became, and have been for many years is an artist. Not a singer, not a pianist, not a violinist, but a visual artist.”
The current 2022-24 touring exhibition, with over 80 works and only two venues in Western Canada including the Audain Art Museum, underlines the incredible range of her creative output in ceramic and bronze sculpture, acrylic and oil on canvas painting, photography and video, as well as multi-media installation. It will offer viewers a rare opportunity to witness such iconic pieces as The Problem with Wedding Veils, Chair with Fish and Pink Ribbon, Red Angel and Picnic with Dog. Curated by Sarah Milroy, Executive Director and Chief Curator of the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, Revelations is drawn from public, corporate and private collections across Canada, in addition to being accompanied by a full-colour 200-page book with contributions by Sarah Milroy, Daina Augaitis, Hank Bull, Liz Magor, Landon Mackenzie, John Geoghegan, Jocelyn Anderson and Nancy Tousley.
