James Hart has carved numerous monumental Haida totem poles and sculptures for over thirty years. His training in Northwest Coast carving began with Robert Davidson when he assisted in building a memorial house for Charles Edenshaw, Hart’s great-great-grand father, a master carver of international importance. Later working for Bill Reid for several years, Hart honed his skills in design, drawing and carving and further pursued his innovative approach to Haida art. He was the first Indigenous artist in 1982 to complete a totem pole in bronze. His talent in art and dedication to the revitalization of Haida culture have earned him an important traditional title Chief 7idansuu, which was previously carried by Charles Edenshaw.
